Event Wrap Up

Ford Ironman Lake Placid provided a scenic backdrop for another exciting day in the Ironman Executive Challenge Series.  Nine XC athletes battled for three coveted XC slots to the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship.  The day saw three athletes set new personal bests.  An exceptionally talented group, six athletes posted a sub-six hour bike split and three athletes ran a sub-four hour marathon.

XC 47 & UNDER

XC veteran, David Mullaney of Haverford, PA won the 47 & Under age group with a finish time of 10:31:38.  With the win, Mullaney claimed his fourth 1st place finish within the Ironman Executive Challenge Series.  He won his groupings at Ford Ironman Louisville (2009), Ford Ironman World Championship (2009) and Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans (2010).  The 2009 Executive Challenge Athlete of the Year had a strong day across the board, but his win was largely due to a 5:18:07 bike split; the fastest among all XC athletes in Lake Placid.

In October, David will be competing with Executive Challenge at the Ford Ironman World Championship.  He earned his XC slot earlier this year at the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans.  This will mark David’s fourth time competing on the Big Island.  He also qualified for the world championship in 2009, 2006, and 2004.

Taking 2nd place in the group was Tom Ripley of Annapolis, MD.  Finishing just 108 seconds behind Mullaney, Tom bested his previous PR (set at Switzerland in 2009) by more than 25 minutesWith a 1:01:02 swim, he was the first XC athlete out of the water.  After a bike split of 5:32:14 (an average of over 20mph), Ripley finished his day with a 3:51:59 marathon; the second fastest run split of the entire XC group.  His finish time of 10:33:26 earned Tom a slot to the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  This will be Tom’s first trip to the Big Island to compete against the world’s most elite triathlets.

With a finish time of 10:50:28, Shane Hinds of Lafayette, LA placed 3rd in the XC 47 & Under group.  After a 1:06:42 swim, Hinds completed the 112-mile bike course in 5:45:38.  Shane’s day was highlighted by 3:51:05 marathon.  His 8:49/ mile pace was the fastest of the entire XC group.

Next to cross the finish line was Adrian Maizey of Greenwich, CT.  Maizey remained strong throughout the 140.6-mile course and was able to post an 11:03:52 finish time.  Adrian was able to claim the 2nd fastest swim split (1:04:41) and the 3rd fastest bike split (5:30:42) of the entire XC group.

Rounding out the group was David Zucker of Austin, TX.  His first time on the course, Zucker executed a consistent race.  A swim split of 1:16:30, bike split of 6:04:09, and run split of 4:09:52 yielded David a finish time of 11:40:19.

XC 48 & OVER

Guy Berkebile of Somerset, PA took 1st place the XC 48 & Over age group.  With a finish time 11:05:52, Berkebile earned himself an XC slot to the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship in October.  This will be his second time competing in the world championship.  Guy’s day was anchored by an impressive 5:26:17 bike split; the second fastest time among all XC athletes.

Finishing 2nd in the group was David Daggett of Winston-Salem, NC.  No matter where you saw David on the 140.6-mile course, his infectious smile was always present.  Daggett, the 2009 Ford Everyday Hero in Coeur d’Alene, led the group out of the water with a 1:05:15 swim.  After posting an impressive 5:31:11 bike split, David ended his day with sub-5 hour marathon for a finish time 11:31:39.

Next to cross the finish line was Gus Field of Darien, CT.  Competing in only his third Ironman, Field had an exceptional day and was able to best his previous PR (set at Coeur d’Alene in 2009) by over one hour and six minutes.  His finish time of 11:53:59 included a 1:05:13 swim split, a 6:15:24 bike split, and a 4:22:08 run split.

Michael Rusin of Chicago, IL rounded out the 48 & Over age group.  His finish time of 12:17:00 was over one hour and nine minutes faster than his previous PR in Coeur d’Alene in 2008.  This improvement wins the XC Kona PR Challenge and earns Michael a slot in the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship.  Rusin day consisted of a 1:30:24 swim, a 6:26:42 bike, and a group best 4:05:10 run.
