Event Wrap Up

Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans was an exciting race for the Ironman Executive Challenge Series, which took a field of nine athletes on a 70.3-mile journey through a challenging course in hot and humid conditions. Five athletes posted sub five-hour finishes, while another four set new personal bests.

In the professional race, Andy Potts led from start to finish, while Samantha Warriner used the day’s fastest run split to take the titles at the event. Potts, the 2007 Foster Grant Ironman 70.3 World Champion, was first out of the water and had the day’s second fastest bike split and fastest run. A strong performance in all three disciplines allowed Potts to cross the line more than 3 minutes 30 seconds ahead of Terenzo Bozzone and more than six minutes before Paul Amey.

XC 49 & UNDER

David Mullaney of Haverford, Pa., took first place in the XC "49 & Under" age group. In his third XC event, Mullaney posted a 4:42:07 finish time that included the fastest bike split of the group. Averaging 24 mph, the 2009 Ironman Executive Challenge Athlete of the Year completed the 56-mile bike course in 2:19:59.

The "49 & Under" age group win provided Mullaney with a slot to the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship, which will mark his fourth time in Kona. He also competed on the Big Island in 2009, 2006 and 2004.  He will be at his next XC start line later this summer at Ford Ironman Lake Placid.

Taking second place in the XC "49 & Under" age group was Enrique Sanchez, of Mexico City, Mexico.  One of two international XC athletes at the race, Sanchez had the strongest swim among the group.  After his impressive 31:59 swim, he held a 22.2 mph pace throughout the bike course and completed the half marathon at a 7:40 pace.

Sanchez's 4:46:42 finish earned him a slot to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, Presented by Ford, in November.  This will be Sanchez’s second trip to Clearwater for the championship; his 2007 appearance posted a finish time of 4:41:06.

New Orleans native Barry Edwards was also among the XC "49 & Under" field.  Edwards, a veteran of the course, participated in last year’s inaugural race.  Edwards' sub five-hour finish included the fastest run split of the day, as he held 7:36 pace for the 13.1-mile course.  His time of 4:52:12 bested his 2009 result by nearly 20 minutes.

Also setting a new Ironman 70.3 personal best was Matthew Wong, of New York City.  In his second XC event, Wong bested his previous PR, set at the 2009 Ironman 70.3 Timberman, by more than 7 minutes. Wong executed a consistent race and completed the course in 5:01:50.  After a 37:39 swim, he averaged more than 21 mph on the bike and held a sub-eight-minute run pace. He will also be competing with Executive Challenge later this year at the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship, taking place in Frankfurt, Germany.

Rounding out the "49 & Under" group was Alan Kleber, of Palmetto Bay, Fla.  Kleber was able to best his previous PR, set at the 2009 Ironman 70.3 Vineman, by more than 20 minutes.  An impressive 2:31:35 bike split highlighted his 5:15:34 finish time. Kleber's bike pace was more than 22 mph for the 56-mile course.

XC 50 & OVER

John O'Brien, of McDonald, Tenn., won a close race in the XC "50 & Over" age group.  A strong performance on both the bike and run helped O’Brien complete the race in 4:53:15 and earn a trip to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, to compete in the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship.  This will be his first time competing in Kona.

Racing side-by-side O’Brien for much of the race was Bill Wiseman, of Blythewood, S.C.  A 23.5 mph pace on the bike course and an 8:26 run pace gave Wiseman an overall time of 4:56:03. Wiseman’s time bested his PR of 5:48:10, set at Ironman 70.3 Florida in 2004, by more than 50 minutues.

Competing with XC for a second time this year was Randy Christofferson, of Greenville, Del. Christofferson had the fastest swim split of the XC "50 & Over" group, completing the 1.2-mile course in 35:41. Christofferson will join the Executive Challenge later this year at the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt, Germany and again in Kailua-Kona. He won his age group and a slot to the world championship at March’s Rohto Ironman 70.3 California

Pierluca Pasquali, of Bologna, Italy, rounded out the XC "50 & Over" age group. Pasquali celebrated his 29th Ironman 70.3 race as he crossed the finish line at the world-famous French Quarter. His high spirits and contagious smile illustrated his passion for Ironman and excitement for racing.  Pasquali competed with XC last year at Ford Ironman Arizona and will be apart of the XC field later this year at Ford Ironman Louisville.
