Ford Ironman Louisville
Ironman XC Executive Challenge
Ukraine’s Viktor Zyemtsev and Germany’s Nina Kraft captured titles at the third annual Ford Ironman Louisville Triathlon. Zyemtsev enhanced his resume, crossing the finish line in first with an overall time of 8:25:27 and his seventh Ironman title. Kraft celebrated her first full-distance Ironman win since 2007, with a time of 9:20:21.
In addition to the professional field of athletes, there were more than 2,300 athletes from around the world who took part in the 2009 event, including seven competitors who participated in the Ironman XC Executive Challenge. The athletes who participated in the challenge include:
Paul Aschkenasy, 42, Haverford, Pa. - Aschkenasy won the Kona PR challenge by improving his previous best by 1 hour and 47 minutes. He was very consistent throughout all three disciplines, proving that sticking to a set plan works.
Ray Brown, 52, Roswell, Ga. - Brown won the 50 and over category with an overall time of 12:02:14. Although he found the freshwater river swim challenging, he made up for it with a sub-6 hour bike and maintained a strong pace for the remainder of the race.
David Mullaney, 43, Haverford, Pa. - Mullaney won the 49 and under group in 10:24:47. He had the fastest marathon time of the XC group, finishing 26.2 miles in 3 hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds. He also saw the fastest bike time of the group, 5:17:26, despite losing nearly 15 minutes fixing two flat tires.
Luis Alvarez, 47, Tlalnepantla, MEX - Alvarez finished his 60th Ironman as a part of the Ironman XC Louisville group, and he wore bib number 60 to commemorate this accomplishment. Luis had the fastest swim of the XC group with a time of 1:09:49. Luis’ next races will be Ford Ironman Arizona and Ironman Cozumel this year, which fall just one week apart.
Michael Rist, 43, Princeton, N.J. – Rist had a personal cheering section at various spots along the course, as his family was in full force on race day. A competitor at heart, Rist is already registered for Ford Ironman Louisville 2010, with a goal of besting his 2009 time.
Robert Reuther, 40, Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Reuther had a consistent race day. Second out of the water in the 49 and under group, he finished with a swim time of 1:13:46. He accomplished a sub-6 hour bike on the challenging and rolling hills of the course.
Kennedy Simpson, 56, Louisville, Ky. – Simpson, a resident of the host city, had the fastest swim of the 50 and over group and finished in 1:12:36. Kennedy is a veteran on the course, as he has participated in Ford Ironman Louisville since its inception in 2007.
XC athletes Paul Aschkenasy, Ray Brown and David Mullaney will be competing at the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship on October 10 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
