| *Awarded Ironman XC Athlete of the Year | |||||||||||

Australia’s Craig Alexander and Great Britain’s Chrissie Wellington defended their titles at the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Alexander added a second consecutive World Championship title to his resume, while Wellington added a third. Wellington’s overall time of 8:54:02 broke the course record set in 1992 by Ironman icon Paula Newby-Fraser.
Weather conditions for the 31st anniversary of Ironman were hot, with temperatures reaching well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the bike and run portions.
In addition to the professional field of athletes, there were nearly 1,800 athletes from around the world who took part in the 2009 event, including 11 competitors who participated in the Ironman XC Executive Challenge. The athletes who participated in the challenge include:
David Mullaney, 43, from Haverford, Pa. – Mullaney won 2009 Ironman XC Series Athlete of the Year. He exited the water with five XC athletes ahead of him, but had an amazing bike and the fastest marathon of the day (3:47:37). With a finish time of 10:49:56, Mullaney earned a win in the XC category. To commemorate the accomplishment, Mullaney, and other professional and age group winners, received a traditional Hawaiian Umeke at the PowerBar Awards Banquet. Read the story on ironman.com...
Ted Herget, 36, from Joneboro, Ark. – Herget, the youngest of the XC competitors, finished the race just minutes behind Mullaney. He finished his first Ford Ironman World Championship in an impressive 10:54:06.
Guy Berkebile, 48, from Somerset, Pa. – Berkebile had the fastest XC bike split this year, finishing the 112 miles in an incredible 5 hours 31 minutes and 47 seconds. This was Berkebile’s first time racing in Kona.
John Marshall, 39, from Miami, Fla. – Marshall was the second XC athlete out of the water and finished the 2.4-mile swim in 1:12:05. Marshall had an overall time of 11:35:21.
Ian Hersey, 47, from Menlo Park, Calif. - Hersey showcased his running strength in Kona and was able to run a sub-4 hour marathon on the notoriously hot course. He finished with an overall time of 11:52:41.
Ray Brown, 52, from Roswell, Ga. – Brown completed the course in 12:49:43, beating his previous Kona best, set in 1997, by more than 15 minutes.
Mark Moses, 45, from Newport Beach, Calif. – Moses swam the 2.4 miles in 1:13:36, giving him the third-fastest swim time of the 11 XC athletes and an overall time of 12:53:01. Happy to be racing in the Ford Ironman World Championship, Moses had a smile on his face through much of the course.
Peter Harding, 45, from Beaconsfield, GBR – Harding had the fastest swim of the XC group with a 1:12:00. Harding and fellow XC Germany qualifier, Mark Moses, spent most of the bike pacing one another. Harding’s first trip to Kona resulted in an overall time of 13:00:45.
Bill Beyer, 48, from Reston, Va. – Beyer finished the 140.6 miles with a 13:56:45, which includes 46:39 spent in T2. He entered transition suffering from muscle cramping and a shortage of electrolytes, but after resting and taking advice from the medical tent, he was ready to take on the very hot marathon. Beyer’s final mile of the day was also his fastest, running it in 8 minutes and 36 seconds.
Paul Aschkenasy, 42, from Haverford, Pa. - Aschkenasy made a plan and stuck to it, resulting in a very consistent day on the Kona course. He maintained an even pace throughout the day and finished the 140.6 miles in 15:10:54.
