Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship
Ironman XC Executive Challenge
Timo Bracht and Sandra Wallenhorst won the titles Sunday, July 5, at the 2009 Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship. Bracht set a course record of 7:59:15 and won his second Ironman European Championship, while Sandra Wallenhorst won the much-anticipated showdown with Yvonne Van Vlerken to take the women's crown.
In addition to the professional field of athletes, there were more than 2,300 athletes from around the world who took part in the 2009 event including three competitors who participated in the Ironman XC Executive Challenge. The athletes who participated in the challenge include:
Peter Harding, 45, from Beaconsfield, Bucks, Great Britain, 11:17:43 – Harding won the Executive Challenge race, leading the XC group for the duration of the course. He set a new personal record (PR) in the process, besting his old PR that was set at Ironman France, by 1 hour and 26 minutes.
Mark Moses, 45, from Newport Beach, Calif., 11:43:14 – Moses finished second while at the same time setting a new personal record thanks to a 13-minute improvement over his previous best, which was set at Ironman Austria in 2007. He had a great swim and was out of the water just 1 minute and 14 seconds behind Harding. Moses and Harding held similar paces through a good portion of the bike course.
Paul-Michael Rebus, 42, from London, England, 12:23:46 – Rebus provided a strong chase throughout the race, making up time in transition and finishing the bike course with a 15-minute improvement over his 2008 Subaru Ironman Canada time. Despite tough conditions with heat and humidity, Paul was able to overcome the challenges and finish with an overall time of 12:23.
