Event Wrap Up

Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship
Ironman XC Executive Challenge

Over 2500 athletes from all over the world participated in the 2010 Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship.  In typical fashion, the weather was hot and the competition even hotter.  The heat wave that swept through Europe increased air temperature as well as water temperature in Langener Waldsee to the point where the swim was declared a non-wetsuit swim.  The hot spell didn’t slow down the nine executive challenge (XC) athletes competing in the event.  These nine athletes represented four different countries – Australia, Denmark, Germany and the United States.

XC 40 & UNDER

Jesper Clausen of Denmark secured the win in the XC 40 & Under group with an incredible 9:57:58. His time was the 2nd sub-10 finish time by an XC athlete this year.  The other belongs Scott Livingston of Bolton, CT, USA, who posted a 9:58:53 at Ironman Brazil.  Clausen managed this extraordinary time on a bike course that was actually 5km longer than usual, but perhaps what is even more impressive is that the race was Clausen’s first full distance Ironman event.  He posted the fastest swim (57 minutes), bike (5:19) and run (3:35) for the group.

Finishing second in the group was Germany’s Chris Burkhardt.   Chris pushed hard all day and ran a 3:41 marathon to help him improve his previous PR (10:50 from Germany 2009) by more than 26 minutes.  With a finish time of 10:23:54, Burkhardt won the Executive Challenge Kona PR Challenge and earned himself a slot in the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship.

Third with the group was Brandon Witte (USA) with a 11:32:06. Witte finished a close second for the Kona PR challenge slot, besting his Arizona 09 time by more than 22 minutes.

Rounding out the group was Seattle’s Dan Ederer.  It’s been a few years since Ederer’s last full distance race, but he proved he was still a competitor by crossing the finish line with a 11:44:01.

XC 41 & OVER

Bill Beyer from Reston, Virginia, USA, won the XC 41 & Over grouping with an 11:36:43, securing his second trip to the Ford Ironman World Championship.  Beyer posted the fastest bike (5:33) and run (4:45) for the grouping.

Second among the group was Mark Betts from Queensland, Australia. Betts crossed the finish line with a 11:59:37.  Betts was a late addition to the Executive Challenge group after the sudden and unexpected cancellation of Ironman Japan by local officials.

Gerardo Goldberger from the United States placed third within the group and set a new Personal Best of 12:27:19.  He also had the fastest swim of the 41 & over group with a 1:00:16.

Randy Christofferson crossed the finish line next for the group with a 13:33.   The Germany race was Randy’s third XC event this year.  Randy secured his spot to the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship at his first XC event this year, Ironman 70.3 California

Another XC veteran, Matthew Wong of New York City, NY was unable to complete the course due to illness.  Ironman Germany was Wong’s 3rd time racing with Executive Challenge.  He also competed with XC at Ironman Arizona (2009) and Ironman 70.3 New Orleans (2010).
