Event Wrap Up

Germany's Michael Raelert and Australia's Mirinda Carfrae captured wins at the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 California, an event in its eleventh year. Raelert, the reigning 70.3 World Champion who also set a course record at the Clearwater event, finished with an overall time of 3:58:27. Former Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Carfrae took the lead on the run and crossed the line at 4:20:29.

The 2010 North American Ironman kickoff event drew more than 2,200 athletes from around the world, including six competitors who participated in the Ironman Executive Challenge. Two Ironman XC athletes won slots to the Ford Ironman World Championship via the Ironman Executive Challenge Series. Two additional XC participants acquired slots to Kona and the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, Presented by Ford, through the age group qualification process.

XC 49 & Under:

Paul Gompers, of Newton, Mass., took first place in the male 45-49 division with a time of 4:28:18. With his 53rd overall standing, Gompers secured slots to both the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 world championship events later this year. This will be his second trip to Kona since taking up the sport just three years ago, finishing the event in 2009 in 10:46:47.

Trevor Katelnikoff, Calgary, Alberta, had a strong race on what many athletes considered a difficult course. After an impressive sub-30 minute swim, he held a 22.2 mph pace throughout the 56-mile bike course. Katelnikoff completed the 13.1-mile run with a 7:38 pace and crossed the finish line in 4:46:50.

Racing against a group of strong swimmers, Greg Penner, of Atherton, Calif., was the first XC athlete and 10th in his age group to exit the water, completing the 1.2-mile swim in 27:46.  A 21.2 mph pace on the bike course and a 7:10 run pace gave Penner an overall time of 4:45:15, finishing second among the XC group and earning a slot to the Ford Ironman World Championship.

Competing for the first time in Oceanside was Dan Quinlan, Northborough, Mass. Quinlan overcame the challenging course and bested his Ironman 70.3 personal record, set at Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island, by more than five minutes.  Quinlan won the Ironman XC PR challenge at Ironman Arizona last year and will be racing in Kona on Oct. 9.

XC 50 & Over:

Randy Christofferson, Greenville, Del.,took first place in the 50 & Over XC division, earning a slot to Kona later this year.  Christofferson executed a consistent race and completed the course in 5:22:04.  After a 33:19 swim, he averaged 20.5 mph on the bike and held a nine-minute run pace. He will also be competing with Executive Challenge later this year at the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans and at the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt, Germany.

Preston Miller, of Scottsdale, Ariz., will also be booking tickets to the Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and Clearwater, Fla., for the respective Ironman world championship events.  Averaging 20 mph on the bike course and maintaining a 10-minute pace on the run, Preston placed second overall in male 65-69 division with a time of 5:55:21.
