Event Wrap Up

39 & Under Category:

Sam Peterson, of Orem, UT, won the “39 & Under” Category at Ford Ironman Arizona with a time of 11:08:25. The group was initially lead by Brandon Witte, of Arnold, Md., who posted a swim split of 1:05:44 and was in the front out of T2.  However, Peterson began to close the gap during the bike and ultimately passed Witte midway through the run.  Dan Quinlan, of Northborough, Mass., had the second-best swim of the group and executed a consistent race throughout the day.  Quinlan bested his PR by more than an hour with his 13:55:40 finish time and won the Kona PR Challenge.  Ford Ironman Arizona was the first Ironman event for both Peterson and Witte.

40 to 49 Category:

Michael Kingston, of Wayne, N.J., won the “40 to 49” Category with an overall finish time of 10:55:49, which included his 1:05:07 swim split – the fastest of the group.  Matthew Wong, of New York, N.Y., chased Kingston for most of the day and continued to tighten the gap as the race progressed.  In the closest race of the 2009 Ironman Executive Challenge (XC) season, Matthew finished second in the group, crossing the line just 60 seconds behind Kingston, and set a new PR with a time of 10:56:49. Guneet Bajwa, of Davis, Calif., finished in third place and bested his previous PR by 48 minutes with a time of 12:54:33.  Rob Bryant, of St. Paul, Minn., posted the second-best swim split of the group with a 1:07:48 and an overall finish time of 13:41:42. Bryant’s run was strengthened by the motivation and support he received from his daughter, Grace. Four-time Ford Ironman Lake Placid finisher Mike Nagel, of Irvine, Calif., completed the 140.6 miles in 14:17:12.  Ford Ironman Arizona was Kingston’s first Ironman race.

50 & Over Category:

Ray Brown, of Roswell, Ga., won the “50 & Over” Category with a time of 11:31:00.  Ford Ironman Arizona was Brown’s third Ironman race in 18 weeks as he also competed in the Executive Challenge at Ford Ironman Louisville and the Ford Ironman World Championship, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Brown’s dominating bike time of 5 hours and 21 minutes helped him win in his category.  Michael Esposito, of Sterling, Va., completed his sixth Ironman race and was second in the group with an overall time of 12:29:42. Mark Cathcart, of Austin, Texas, was the first of the group to exit the water, with a swim time of 1:14:48. Cathcart finished his first official Ironman event in third place with a time of 13:26:08. Fourth in the group was Pierluca Pasquali, of Bologna, Italy, who finished his 22nd Ironman in 14:06:36. Rounding out the “50 & Over” Category was Jon Sasser, of Raleigh, N.C., who completed the 140.6 miles in 16:38:27.  This was Sasser’s fourth Ironman finish.
